Portland's Starlight Run and Dick's Sporting Goods Team Up in Support of Parkinson's Research

(3-30-10) From Press Release - The Dick's Sporting Goods National Runners' Month, a major sports-marketing initiative scheduled for May 2010, named The Michael J. Fox Foundation's Team Fox program as its official charity partner and beneficiary. Together, Dick's Sporting Goods National Runners’ Month and Team Fox will inspire runners across the country this spring to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for Parkinson's disease. The initiative includes a Facebook campaign, in-store promotions, racing opportunities and online donation vehicles.

"We're excited to partner with Team Fox in the race to find a cure for Parkinson's disease," said Jeffrey Hennion, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, Dick's Sporting Goods. "Team Fox is an exceptional organization that shares our company's belief that running can make a positive difference in people's lives," said Hennion.

"As every runner knows, running is a sport that requires not only your body, but your heart, mind and soul. That may be part of the reason runners gravitate to Team Fox," said Michael J. Fox. "We're incredibly grateful to the thousands of people who have already laced up their sneakers with the goal of making a difference in the millions of lives touched by Parkinson's - and we thank Dick’s Sporting Goods for helping us spread the word to athletes across the country who may not know that their passion can be part of the solution to PD."

Officials for the Dick's Sporting Goods National Runners' Month kicked off the partnership by pledging to donate at least $50,000 to Team Fox and to motivate individual fundraising to Team Fox using the Web, social media, and Team Fox's own large community of members.

The Facebook campaign will run from April 6 through June 6, 2010 during which Dick's Sporting Goods will donate one dollar to Team Fox for every running photo uploaded or tagged by runners on the Dick's Sporting Goods Facebook page. Runners who upload or tag photos will not only raise funds for Parkinson's, they will automatically be entered into weekly prize drawings. Each week in May, one lucky runner will win a $100 gift certificate valid at any Dick's Sporting Goods store.

Individuals will also be able to donate to Team Fox through the Dick's Sporting Goods National Runners' Month website and donations page on TeamFox.org. Additionally, Team Fox will have teams running at each of the ten official Dick's Sporting Goods National Runners' Month events across the country in May and early June, raising funds for Parkinson's research.

Vancouver USA to Host New Marathon in June 2011

(3-29-10) Vancouver, Washington will have a new marathon in 2011. The Vancouver USA Marathon will debut on Sunday, June 19, 2011 and will be accompanied by a Health and Fitness Show at the Vancouver Hilton that will be held during the two days prior.

2010 Marathon and State of the Sport Reports

(3-28-10) From Running USA Wire #25-03-10 - In 2009, U.S. marathons overcame the "gloom and doom" of the recession by posting another year of record participation with 467,000 estimated finishers as well as the largest percent increase (nearly 10%) in more than 25 years. Across the country last year from New York City to Seattle, marathons most likely either sold-out or had a record field, and to-date, 2010 looks as promising with sold-out marathon fields at Walt Disney World, Chevron Houston, Honda LA, the upcoming 114th Boston and this October’s Bank of America Chicago.

There are several interconnected reasons for this marathon "mania' including: 1) a response to the bad economy (e.g., relieve stress, more time to train for some, etc.), 2) training for and running a marathon is something that one can control unlike the stock market or the economy, 3) positive, feel good energy surrounds marathon preparation and race weekend, 4) well-organized, fun events and 5) the challenge of 26.2 miles – a greater sense of accomplishment for many during bad economic times.

2010 Nike Pre Classic Shaping up to be Another Hot Ticket

(3-4-10) From Press Release - Four of the superstars in the sport of track & field--Kenenisa Bekele, Yelena Isinbayeva, Tyson Gay, and Sanya Richards--will compete in the 36th annual Prefontaine Classic on Saturday, July 3rd at historic Hayward Field. These Fabulous Four are Ambassadors of the inaugural IAAF Diamond League circuit that kicks off in Doha, Qatar on May 14th and arrives in Eugene the first weekend in July (www.diamondleague.com).

Bekele and Isinbayeva, in particular, have dominated their events during the first decade of the new millennium, and each was recently named Athlete of the Decade by Track & Field News magazine.

Bekele, the 27-year-old from Ethiopia, has won three Olympic and five outdoor World Championships gold medals, 11 IAAF Cross Country Championships, and perhaps most significantly, currently holds the world records in the outdoor 5,000 and 10,000 meters. In 2008, Bekele ran the 4th fastest 10,000 of all-time (26:25.97) at the Pre Classic; he will race in the 5k at this year's meet.

Isinbayeva, also 27, has won two Olympic and five indoor or outdoor World Championships golds for Russia, and has set 17 indoor and outdoor world records in the pole vault. The 2010 Prefontaine Classic will be Isinbayeva's first appearance outdoors in the United States as she continues her climb towards becoming history's first female 17-foot vaulter.

Gay was the double gold medalist at 100 and 200 meters at the 2007 Osaka World Championships. He has set three American Records in the 100, including the current AR of 9.69 seconds, and has the third fastest-time ever in the 200 meters, the distance he will race in Eugene.

Richards won World Championships gold in the 400 this past year in Berlin, and has been ranked No. 1 in the world at the 400 five times by Track & Field News. The Pre Classic favorite, who just turned 25 last week, has run under 50-seconds an astonishing 41 times, more than any other one-lapper in history.

The NIKE Prefontaine Classic will be broadcast live on NBC in the U.S., and will be seen by an international television audience in 130 countries worldwide. More people will watch this year's Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus than any other event to originate in Eugene - ever.

Tickets for the meet go on sale Friday, March 5th at 9 a.m. Pacific Time from 1-800-WEBFOOT, www.goducks.com, or in person at the Casanova Center ticket office.
